The Denim Shirt 4 Ways

One of the big trends for this fall is the denim shirt. While undoubtedly casual in and of itself, the possibilities for how to wear this shirt are endless. I came up with these four in a matter of minutes. My favorite is probably the black maxi dress/ denim shirt combo. I think this is the epitome of downtown cool. It’s especially perfect for that cocktail party/art gallery opening/dinner at the expensive restaurant at which it took months to get reservations. The sparkles say, “I’m dressy.” The denim shirt says, “I’m cool without trying.” And isn’t that what we all want to be? But, really, open your mind when you look at this shirt and imagine it with sequin skirts, satin pants, color, black, dressy shorts, leather, colors, black, patterns…the list goes on. Just avoid the denim shirt with the khaki twill pant because that may be the one look that is just not cool anymore.

You Haven't Been Forgotten

Lest anyone think I only style people who are 30-40ish and a size 4, I wanted to post a couple of outfits that address a different age and/or size group.

Both could be reunion outfits (40th) but the first one with the dress might be too much for the venue. I did purposely dress it down with the bag but I like it more for a nice dinner or cocktail event. (Look how boring they made it with the pearls and the black clutch!) However, I will say that, if the material of the dress had been in a jersey, it would totally work for the reunion. The second outfit is sophisticated but still hip. All of the pieces in it happen to also be plus size. However, the silouhette of this one would work in non-plus size just as well.

I love them both!

Reunion

It's reunion season again. For some of us, it's a big one (I'm not mentioning what number but you can probably figure it out.) I love to come up with reunion outfits for people and have been doing it long before I became a Personal Shopper. Even at the stores I've worked at in the past, shoppers looking for the perfect outfit always came in frantically this time of year. Usually, their reunion was in a day or two- sometimes even that night! This, of course, adds a lot of pressure. So, if you plan on going to yours this year (whether it's college or high school) take a look at these example ensembles. The key to the perfect reunion outfit is 1. what is the venue and 2. never look like you're trying too hard.

Venue is really important. Even though I might wear the navy sequined skirt outfit to dinner, I wouldn't wear it to my reunion unless I knew it was cocktail attire. It's more creative than normal cocktail attire but still very evening so it would work. But, if you're going to a pool bar for beers and bar food, you'll look like you're desperate for attention in it. That's when you turn to the green cargo pant look. The tuxedo jacket and jeans will really work for any event and, if you like it but think it might still be too glitzy, change the sequined tank to a cotton tank and you'll be good to go.

Of course, I don't know what I'm wearing to mine in a couple of weeks but it will be some version of one of these. I'll keep you posted!

Tavi is a Fashion Genius?


Have any of you heard of Style Rookie? It is a blog by this 13 (maybe 14 now) year old girl (Tavi Gevinson) who started it when she was 11. She is obsessed with fashion and has a really impressive knowledge base about fashion history. She's also clearly a smart and interesting girl who references a lot of cool stuff in her blog. She's become really famous probaby mostly because she's so young. She become so famous that major designers (Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano, the Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte to name a few) have invited her to see their runway shows... in Paris! She's been travelling the world, doing speaking engagements on teenage marketing, collaborating with designers and magazines on ad campaigns and fashion layouts. I mean, she is amazing. The New Yorker just did a big article on her and the uproar her cult status is causing. As you might expect, some fashion big-wigs are totally put off by the whole idea of this kid as a fashion genius. Some people even suggest that she's selling out for accepting gifts and money from designers, brands, selling tee shirts, etc. I think that is totally hilarious. I mean, what's the problem with the kid figuring out how to cash in? Was Mark Zuckerberg a sell-out because he found a way to get rich young? Or, to keep it more on the creative industry-front, any musician who gets a big record deal when they are a kid (Britney, Rihanna, David Archuleta)? Ridiculous.

Here's what I do question, though. Is Tavi really such a fashion goddess herself? I've seen a hundred young people over the years rocking this exact same look. Part vintage/thrift store, part clashing patterns and colors, part purposefully messy bag lady. As a matter of fact, she's like a cross between Mary Kate Olsen meets Susie Bubble meets Lisa Loeb. Not that original. What I like about her much more than her personal style is her personality. She's very self aware and world aware, too. Keeping Clean

As I mentioned in my very short post last night, I just finished a big relay race. I'm not one to mention beauty products very often, mostly because I don't consider myself to be a real product junkie, but I do have my favorites. Now I have one more to add to the list.

Showers (and sinks and beds, for that matter) were generally unavailable for my 32 hour adventure. 6 of us were packed into an SUV and so packing had to be minimal at best. We had a big box of baby wipes to clean up with after each of our runs (thank God since it was 100 degrees on the first day) but you didn't exactly want to be cleaning your face with a baby wipe. I had brought along these facial cleansing wipes that I found by British beauty brand Boots and I'm so happy I did. The smell is fantastic, they are totally refreshing, and they got my face really clean. The fact that I didn't break out at all without my normal skincare regimen and was sweating profusely all the while getting absolutely no sleep is a testament to their effectiveness. LOVE!
